Obituary for Virginia Jeff Poteat (Asher)

Virginia Jeff Asher was born on May 21, 1937 in Brookneal, Virginia. She attended Campbell County High School in Brookneal, Virginia and was a member of Mount John Calvary Baptist Church. After school Virginia married Willie Poteat and moved to Chesapeake, Virginia where she became a member of Providence Road Church of Christ. Virginia retired from the Chesapeake Public School system, where she worked for over 25 years as a custodian. She spent much of her tenure at Indian River High School in Chesapeake. Virginia was called from labor to reward in the early morning hours of January 29, 2017. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Virginia is predeceased by her mother and father Stella and Nicholas Asher, husband Willie Poteat, brothers Joseph and Jeff Asher, her sister Mattie Nicholas Freeman, granddaughter Alisha Asher, and her daughter Debbie Ann Poteat. Virginia leaves to mourn her passing: Two sons Toby Asher (Robinette) Lynchburg, VA and Roger Poteat (Effie) Norfolk, VA; a God daughter Mary Hinton Norfolk, VA; five grandchildren, Shuron Poteat, Aaren Poteat-Dance, Anthony Poteat, Bertha Poteat all of Chesapeake, VA and Toby Asher Jr. Lynchburg, VA; ten great- grandchildren, Markell Poteat, Oreona Poteat, Anthony Poteat Jr., Cassidy and Camryn Poteat-Dance, Xavier Poteat, Jariyah Poteat, and Teyana and Audrianna Johnson; two special sons Ricky Butler and Anthony Boyd; and a host of relatives and friends. Visitation will be at Graves Funeral Home, Friday, February 3rd from 1-6pm and funeral service will be Saturday, February 4th at 1p. at Graves Funeral Home. Interment at Carver Cemetery.
