Adelaide Marie Johnson departed this life to dance with God on August 1, 2017
Adelaide M. Johnson was born April 1, 1922, only child of James E. and Marie E. Leedie Redrick. (Deceased) Adelaide was married to David D. Johnson, Sr. (deceased, 1998) for 28 years and She raised three children David D. Johnson, Jr (deceased,1991), Veronica L. Johnson Staples, (spouse Buddy Staples) and Paula Maria Johnson-Foster (deceased,2003). Her grandchildren are Dwain A. Johnson of Sumpter South Carolina and Akinlabi D. Mason and wife Erica of Temple Hill. Maryland and great grandchildren Elijah and Paul. She leaves behind many cousins and a host of friends. She was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church in the Bronx for many years and after moving became a member of Immaculate Conception Church for 20 years. While in Norfolk a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She attended St. Peters Elementary School in Yonkers New York 1937 and graduated Warren High School in 1941. She pursued a college education after her children were grown. She attended Malcolm King College in New York City and received a degree in Applied Sciences 1978 and Marymount College of New York City and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1987. During the years prior she received certificates in the study of Gerontology, Upholstery, Bookkeeping, Art and managed to learn how to swim Adelaide worked at the Brooklyn Naval Yard during WWII to support our American Troops deployed overseas. She worked for several large companies in doing all phases of office work and management. These companies included Abercrombie and Fitch and the office at Marymount College. In 1968, she was awarded Shop Stewart excellence award from the Secretary’s Guild of America. She received several awards for her artwork including an award for Artistic Excellence from the resident art show in 1997. Her hobbies included sewing, painting, knitting, crocheting, pottery and ceramics and lot of community involvement. She was always committed to the tenant associations where ever she resided and donated to many charities. Her greatest passion was ballroom dancing and travelling.
She retired from Marymount College business office in January 1988. In 2008, she moved from the Bronx, New York to be near daughter Veronica. She lived in Norfolk up until January 2017 and moved to Virginia Beach with Veronica and Buddy where she resided until she went home to be in the arms of God.
