On Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at 0943, SFC Nelson James Thompson our beloved husband, father, son, uncle, cousin, grandfather and friend went to be with our LORD. Nelson was well known and always made you laugh or smile. He was a strong man of God, nice, faithful, a prayer warrior and the backbone for his family. Nelson was a nurturer, a fierce warrior, a shield and a protector; he was trustworthy and kind. To his friends he was easy to talk to, sweet, caring, funny and a wonderful comforter. Nelson graduated from Mitchell County High School in 1977. He was a star athlete excelling at football and track and field. He also played shortstop on the city league softball team. Nelson attended Albany State in 1977 and then entered the US Army in 1978. He was the Homeowner Association Vice President in his community. Nelson was a stranger to no one, a community leader and the neighborhood ambassador. In addition, he cared for the safety of all children while patrolling the halls as “Watch Dog” at Joliff Middle School. Nelson was a dedicated band parent and PTA member. He was a faithful partner of The Mount Chesapeake for over 10 years and a member of The Mount Western Branch Launch Team. Nelson was also a faithful Intercessor for over 10 years and a Team Leader. He was a very active member of The Mount Men’s Mentoring Ministry.
Nelson James Thompson was born on January 5, 1959, in Camilla, GA to the late Charles Thompson. He is predeceased by a sister, Cassandra Worthy, and brother, Danny Thompson, and daughter-in-law, Daisy West.
His mother is Ozie B. Thompson and his living siblings are: Larry (Marion) Thompson, Kelvin (Rena) Thompson, Stephanie Thompson, Calvin Thompson, Markus Thompson, Kenyatta Thompson, Mary Ann Brown, Ruthie Mae Jones (Joe Louis), Mary Dean (Michael) Williams, Abraham (Josephine) Robinson, Willie C. Robinson, Connie (Gloria) Robinson, Stacy Golden. Aunts: Willie Beatrice Dukes, Lestine Brown and Ernestine Ivy; Father and Mother-in-law, Hosea and Elizabeth Brinson, Brother-in-laws: Dennis Worthy, Eldred (Cynthia) Brinson and Tavis (Amanda) Brinson, Sister-in-law, Shumonica (Andrew) Coe.
He retired as Sergeant First Class (SFC) from United States Army. While serving in the United States Army he had various occupations: License Practical Nurse, Medical Specialist and Hawk Missile Crewman and served in South West Asia and Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He was also employed and retired as a Letter Carrier from the United States Postal Service.
“Ice-T” or “Boo-Boo” as he was known by family and friends, leaves to cherish his memory, his lovely wife, Tahisha P. Thompson, his children: Jada Thompson, Jami'yah Thompson, Derrick West, Maria Pistis (Savino), Maurice Mullins, Tiffany Thompson, Nelson Thompson, Jr., Nicholas Thompson (Mia), Ida-Marie Thompson and Margo Thompson. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren, and 3 Godchildren: Cheron Norvell, Tranika Starks, Sebastian Lassiter, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and The Mount Nation.
