Obituary for John Selby

To our beloved John A. Selby Swiftly the wind blew, we thought it’d be just a few, but it left something so new, it was a sad and unpalatable news. Just when we were asking, we thought you’d still be breathing, we are left with our jaws hanging, when we were told what was happening.

It is with profound sorrow that God has called our loving father, grandfather, uncle and friend home.

John A. Selby was born in Swan Quarter, North Carolina to Arthur and Mable Selby on September 7,1928. he is predeceased by his parents and1sister Sissy Davenport, 3brothers Charlie, David Lee and, Sammie Selby.
John or Big John as affectionately known by his close friends and family moved to New York at an early age, where he began his working career in shipping and receiving. He would eventually make a delivery at the York Candy Factory in Garden City, New York where he would meet Ernestine Hill it wouldn’t be long before he would begin working at the same location and marry Ernestine on January 20, 1951. He would spend the next 62 years happily married to Ernestine Selby and during this union two children were born Keith and Lola.
John would later begin his working career on long Island as a truck driver with Clark Construction company and he would work there for 5 years. He would soon switch over to A to Z construction supply and work here for the next 30 years. After suffering a near fatal head on collision he would retire to enjoy retired life in Huntington New York. He would later downsize his home and move to Jamaica New York to be closer to Lola, David Martin and his grandchildren. He and his wife of 62 years would live their until they decided to move in Castle retirement residence in Forest Hills which remained his home until he was called by God.

He was proceeded in death by his loving wife, Ernestine Selby and Lola Selby Martin his cherished daughter. He leaves to cherish his memory, his son Keith A. Selby, 3 grandchildren, Cheryse Annette Lartique, Langston Earl Martin and Xavier Hunter Martin, 3 great grandchildren, Korvette, Roman, and Kennedy Lartique; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family members.
