Obituary for Athylone Hardy Winfield (Bailey)

Athylone Hardy Winfield (Bailey)
Athylone Bailey Winfield entered eternal life on April 29, 2018. She was the only child born November 17, 1924 to the union of the late Sign and Ellen Bailey of Wakefield Virginia. She was raised in Wakefield Virginia and was affectional known as “Effie”.
Effie received her education from Sussex Training School and later received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Virginia State College and a Master’s of Arts from Hampton University. Effie had a passion for education and wanted every child to have the best education possible. Effie was employed by the Norfolk School System as a teacher at Holt Street, Tidewater Park, Chesterfield, Landsdale and Tucker Elementary Schools. She spent many years in the classroom but later moved on to become a Guidance Counselor at Tucker Elementary School, which was the position she held when she retired.
In 1971 she married the love of her life the late Master Sargent Vernon Hill Winfield Sr. and relocated to San Jose California before returning back to Virginia. Effie treasured the time she spent traveling with her beloved Vernon. If you ever held a conversation with her, she would tell you of the places she visited and would always mention her favorites Vatican City, Mexico and Paris.
Effie was a very active person, she loved to travel with her Senior Citizen’s group and she was an avid Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy fan. She always made time to watch her favorite game shows and looked forward to her trips to the Casino. Her philosophy was not to let grass grow under her feet. It was evident she had a zeal for life. She was active in the community and belonged to several organizations to include Va. Beach Council of Negro Women where she served as Treasurer; the Huntersville Seniors where she again was the Treasurer; the Urban League Guild; Retired Teachers; the Va. Beach NAACP and many others. She loved her church and was a devoted member and gave of her heart both with time and financial support. Her love for hats was noticed by all because you rarely saw her without a hat. The compliments she received always made her smile.
Effie was proceeded in death by two of her cousins whom she was very close to Erling Bailey Sr. (Nannie) and Elijah Bailey (Bessie). Left to treasure her memories is her closest living relative first cousin Elizabeth Bailey Ricks, Tate Bailey (Gloria), one stepson Vernon Winfield Jr. (Rita), three stepdaughters Joan Wilson, Rev. Doris Edwards (James) and Deborah Pettaway, two sister-in-laws Nettie Mensia and Thalia Winfield, one brother-in-law Ward Winfield, two God children Laverne Barnes and Gail Johnson, her closest friend Patricia Myers a host of other cousins and friends.
The Family would like to thank her caregivers Clara Ashby, Brenda Skinner, Teresa Vann, Alexis Grant and the Anytime Homecare Staff.
