Mary Louise Carey, of Portsmouth, VA, transitioned into eternal rest in her home on August 29, 2018, surrounded by her family. She was 81 years old.
Mary, affectionately known by her children as “Pookie,” was born on October 19, 1936, in Portsmouth, VA, to Mary Morgan Williams and Alexander Watford. She was educated in the Portsmouth School System, graduating from I. C. Norcom High School in 1955.
Mary leaves to cherish her loving memory her children, Maurice Carey, Jr. (Nathalin) of Portsmouth, VA; Michelle D. Martin of Chesapeake, VA; Lynn C. Holliday of Washington, D.C.; Michael K. Carey (Zona) of Chesapeake, VA; Lisa L. Arnold of Portsmouth, VA; and Eric R. Carey (Rachel) of Portsmouth, VA. Surviving siblings are Rita (Karo) Bell (Earl) of Chesapeake, VA; Laura Belin (James) of Portsmouth, VA; Diainn Goodman (Thaddeus) of Ijamsville, MD; Linda Powell (Earl) of Chesapeake VA; Beverly Jones (Ronnie) of Chesapeake, VA; Ovid Williams (Phyllis) of Charlotte, NC; and Nadine Scoby of Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by thirteen (13) grandchildren, eleven (11) great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other close family members and friends. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Carey, Sr. and her brother, Willis Williams (Bro).
As a young girl, Mary enjoyed skating, tennis, and playing the saxophone. She married the love of her life, Maurice (Pop), in 1956 and devoted her life to her family. Her children and family remember her as the pillar of the family and a doting mother who always put her family first. She kept her favorite family photos in her possession and never traveled too far without being in the company of many, if not all, of her children and grandkids. She loved vacationing on the Outer Banks where she would be surrounded by family and friends. People often commented about the Carey family, “if you see one, you see ‘em all.” Pookie made everyone feel welcomed in her home where she spoiled family and friends with her famous cinnamon buns and home cooking. She enjoyed family gatherings, especially during the holidays, and also enjoyed singing and listening to her favorite songs.
Mary loved the Lord, her church, Total Life, and her Pastor, Mark S. Churn.
