Obituary for Lois Elizabeth Norman (Wilson)

Lois Elizabeth Norman (Wilson)
Lois “Lizzie” Norman
March 18, 1923 – October 25, 2017

Lois E. Norman was born in Norfolk, VA. She was the second oldest of 13 siblings born to the late Henry and Julia Wilson. She graduated from Norfolk County Public Schools and was married to the late Deacon Raymond H. Norman, Sr. in 1945.

Lois Norman’s middle name is Elizabeth. However, she was affectionately known by her friends as “Lizzie”, and even more affectionately known by her great grandchildren as “Little”.

Lizzie believed in working hard, always doing her best, and service to others. Whatever the job, she always mastered it to perfection. She was a domestic worker, nurse’s aide, and a food services rep in the Norfolk Public School System. She worked a number of years as a Security Officer in JB Hunters Department Store, which later became the larger Thalhimers Department Store. Mom took great pride in her security job and the coveted “red coat” that she wore.

Liz loved the Lord and was blessed to be here for 94 years. She was a long time member of Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, serving in several positions; a Number 2 Choir member for many years, a member of the Number 1 Usher Board, an original member of Helping Hands and the Food/Clothing Ministries. Also, until recently, Mom was a regular participant in the Wednesday Bible Class. Mount Gilead and her church family played a major role in her life.

Mom was a devoted wife, loving mother, and close friend/confidant to many. A quiet, mild-mannered and humble woman, she never met a stranger. Young and old were attracted to her because of her loving and giving nature. For over 65 years, she and Dad, Raymond H. were a loving team in the church, in the community, and in their home. They demonstrated the importance of putting God first, loving your family, serving others, and striving for excellence. Their efforts have never gone in vein. They have impacted countless lives; from their church family, to coworkers, neighbors, relatives, young folks, and of course their children and their children’s children.

She loved her family. To her children, there could be no better mother. To her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she was known as “Little”. But the love she showed them was big!

In her latter years, as her health began to decline, Mom never complained. She kept the faith and trusted God. While we wanted her healed on this side; God chose to heal her on the “brighter” side. To that we say, “To God be the glory”.

Lois Norman is survived by five children; Raymond Jr. (Shirley) of Columbus, Ohio; Barbara Jennings (Sidney) of Norfolk, VA; Ronald (Margie) of Dumfries, VA; Karen Haynes; and Terry (Toni) of Fredericksburg, VA and one brother Howard Wilson (Pearlie) of Rocky Mount, NC. She was preceded in death by her son Lawrence Norman. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, 20 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren and many other family, extended family and friends; especially her BFF for over 70 years, Marie Dailey. We would like to express our sincere thanks to her special care givers; LaVerne Johnson and her niece, Sharon “Cheata” Jordan.
