James "Jake" Lee Evans, 91, died Thursday, December 1 7, 2020, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A native of Capron, Southampton County, VA., Jake was born on July 6, 1929. He was the eldest of three children. Jake rendered 30 years of exemplary municipal service to the City of Norfolk, Department of Public Works Division of Traffic Engineering, and retired on January 8, 1992. Jake was a faithful member and well-respected Deacon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Chesapeake, VA. Despite his failing health, Jake faithfully attended Sunday School, prayer meetings, and church services. Jake loved God, his church, family, and friends. He loved being outdoors and growing cucumbers, tomatoes, and collards in his garden.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents Leroy and Anna C. Evans, one brother, Woodrow Evans, and son, Willie Lee Leigh.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 32 years, Shirley F. Evans, Norfolk, VA; one brother, Lloyd H. Evans, Norfolk, VA; and two children, son, Joseph DeAngelou Hines (Capucine), Windsor Mill, MD; and daughter, Cynthia Baxter, Norfolk, VA; one Brother-in-law, Paul W. Fentress (KaSean); and two Sisters-in-law of Norfolk, VA, Annie M. Gordon; and Ida M. Fentress.
Stepchildren: James Holloway, Suffolk, VA; Terry Boone (Wayne) Chesapeake, VA; Denise
Holloway, Norfolk, VA; Michael Holloway (Emily), KY; and, Darian Holloway, Norfolk, VA.
Grandchildren: Tanya Sawyer; Koritta Sawyer; Julian D. Hines (Erica); LaRecia A. Hines; Justus D. Hines; Abigail P.M. Hines; Andrae Baxter; Tre'von Baxter; and Joshua Baxter.
Step-grandchildren: Ciara Holloway; Vincent Holloway; Wayneisha Boone; Deterris Callaway; Deterrion Callaway; Q'wana Holloway; Michael Holloway, Jr.; and Layla Holloway.
Great-grandchildren: De'Onte Walters; Thomas Harris; Trinity Harris; Reece N. Hines; Jason D. Hines; and Legend Arrington.
