Obituary for Doris Whitaker Beckwith (Whitaker)

On Sunday, February 24, 2019, the Lord opened the Gates of Heaven and called our cherished loved one, Doris W. Beckwith, home to rest in His Ever Loving Arms. She was born in Nash County, North Carolina to James and Margie Richardson Whitaker. Doris grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, was educated in the public school system, and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She was married to the late William R. Beckwith.
She was employed for several years as a dental assistant before beginning a career with the City of Norfolk Social Services. After Doris retired , she continued to enjoy her many hobbies….. sewing, working jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, being an avid reader, and puttering on the computer and tablet. Ever the fashionista, she loved to “shop ‘til you drop” with her granddaughter, Kendra.
Doris was also member of the Eastern Star. A pillar of strength for the family, she was always there with encouraging words of wisdom and love. Doris was predeceased by her loving husband, William R. Beckwith, daughter, Benita R. Simmons, grandson, Prinest Burton, Jr., brother, Orlander Whitaker, and sister, Sarah O. Jones.
Heartfelt memories will live on through and be cherished by her children, daughters, Carolyn S. Brown (Emanuel), Marjorie A. Burton, and son Richard A. Boyce, Sr. (Rosa), grandchildren, Kendra Brown-Walker (Michael), Katrina Burton, Nicole Boyce, Daryl Boyce (Angela), Lemonte Boyce, (Tina), Richard Boyce, Jr. (Kristen), great grandchildren, her beloved pet bunny, Precious Prince, and a host of other relatives and friends.
