Obituary for Glen Bernard Yonkers Sr.
On Friday March 1 ,2019, Glen B. Yonkers, went home to be with the Heavenly Father at age 67. Glen was born on February 6, 1952 in Portsmouth , VA. Glen attended Portsmouth public schools and graduated from I.C Norcom High School in 1970. He went on to further his education attending Norfolk State College, majoring in music. During the draft for the Vietnam War, he decided he wanted to do more and serve his country. In 1971, he enlisted in the US Marine Corp. He went on to work at Ford Motor Company and retired after 30 years of service.
At an early age, he was baptized at New Bethel Baptist Church. He later followed his roots and joined Fourth Baptist Church where he was a a dedicated member of the combined choirs and male chorus until his health declined.
Glen had a deep love for sports and music. He loved to attend Norfolk State Football games with friends and family and looked forward to performances from the Spartan Legion Band. He was also an jazz lover and a collector of smooth jazz albums. His love poured into others as he is responsible for introducing several of his friends and family to jazz. He was known for staying up all night to create Christmas Jazz cassette tapes for his loved ones. He enjoyed playing in the Senior Softball league for Ford Motor Company. Glen was a dedicated Redskins and Yankees fan and a collector of their memorabilia. He was also apart of the Southeastern District Football Association were he refereed for local high school football games for over 10 yrs.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents William and Beatrice Butler, guardians Joseph and Mariah Bridget, and sisters Marta Butler and Marcella Butler. Glen is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Adrianna Yonkers, two sons, Glen Yonkers of Washington, DC (Stacey), Shawn Yonkers of Detroit, MI (Kisha), three daughters Tammy Pointe of Jacksonville, NC (Jamal) Brittany Tonsall of Norfolk, Va and Lakeisha Harrod of Virginia Beach, two sisters, Karen Yonkers of Portsmouth,Va , Sharon Yonkers of San Diego . Ca, and one brother William Butler (Monita) of Fort Worth, TX. He leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, one Aunt two Uncles , and a host of nieces , nephews, cousins and friends.
