Obituary for Mildred Louise Landers (Grier)

Mildred was born on February 2. 1936 in the rural town of Douglas in Coffee County. Georgia to Charles Frank and Inez Poole Grier. At the early age of 3. the family moved to St. Simon· s Island. Georgia where she remained throughout her early childhood. In 1948. the family moved to Brunswick. Georgia and it was there at the age of 12 that she joined the church. In 1953. she met Ervin Landers. Jr. who was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Glynco, Georgia. While in the military. the couple relocated several times. Norfolk. VA. Key West, FL Philadelphia, PA. and Indian Head. MD were duty assignments along the way before Ervin was deployed to England. Upon Ervin's return from England. they went back to Brunswick, GA. then Newport, Rhode Island before settling in Philadelphia, PA where he was honorably discharged. They called Philadelphia home for 27 years. While in Philadelphia Mildred"s relationship with Ervin's family was very much more like that of a sister than an in•law. The couple was united in marriage in 1956 and to that union three sons were born. Michael, Rodney, and Reginald. The boys were initially schooled in Philadelphia before all three headed off to college. While in Philadelphia. Mildred worked performing seamstress tasks before being trained to do private duty nursing. At the insistence of her sons. Ervin and Mildred moved from Philadelphia to Virginia Beach. VA helping to raise their grandsons and be supportive of their scholastic and athletic endeavors. Ervin and Mildred were married for 53 years until his demise. Mildred called Virginia Beach home for the past 28 years. In 2005. she joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was also active with the Red Hatters Social Club. She enjoyed cooking. baking, and preparing holiday family meals. She also loved sewing and was an avid reader of history. She also found it hard to resist a challenging crossword puzzle. Mildred was predeceased by her husband. Ervin Landers. Jr .• son. Rodney l. landers. Sr. and sister Doris Stoner. She is survived by sons Michael Landers and Reginald Landers. both of Virginia Beach. VA: daughter in-law. Michelle Landers of Virginia Beach. VA: grandsons Rodney Landers. Jr .• Carl Landers. Neal Landers, Oevonti Miller. Teri Miller: great grandson Raheem Tyson: granddaughters Angel Prioleau Landers. Tanganyika Tyson; great granddaughters Sitti Tyson. Malaiha Tyson-Watson, Olivia Dawson: special cousin and Patriarch of the Poole family Albert Poole. special cousins residing in St. Simons Island. GA Lucille White and Theresa Malachi and a host of nieces. nephews. cousins and friends are left to cherish her memory.
