Cleveland attended the Roxboro Elementary School and graduated from the John B. Bond High School, Lewiston, North Carolina. After high school graduation, he joined the United States Air Force where he served for 21 years. During his tour of duty Cleveland received countless of numbers of awards, certificates for his exceptional performance. Cleveland was a decorated serviceman with a long list of accolades. He retired from the Air Force June 1971 with a rank of E8. Not was this just his enjoyment and pleasure; this allowed him to see that his late brother-in-law, Willie Rascoe's lawn was well maintained and groomed.
In 1956 he was joined in Holy Matrimony to his lovely bride, Vina Mae Rascoe. To this union, one son was born.
At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savoir and joined Sandy Branch Baptist Church in Roxboro, North Carolina. Throughout his Air Force career he and his family were under the watch care of other Churches. In recent years he joined and enjoyed a weekly Bible Study group in the home of brother in-law, David (Jean) Rascoe in Chesapeake Virginia.
