Obituary for Mamie Cleo Foy-Walker (Revels)

Mamie Cleo Foy-Walker, 90, peacefully made her transition, after a brief illness, from mortality to immortality on Monday, May 6, 2019 with her family at her bedside. Born on April 18, 1929 in Clinton, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Victoria Butler Revels and Matthew Dean Revels. In 1940 her family moved to Norfolk where she was enrolled in Norfolk Public Schools and was graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1948. After graduation, Mamie moved to New York. Her craning spirit and love of people led her to become a CNA which enabled her to provide assistance to those in need of health care. After living and working for many years in NY, she returned to Norfolk in 1972 and worked at Clark American from 1977 to 1995 until retirement.

While a resident of the Lambert’s Point Community in Norfolk, Mamie joined a church in that community, the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church. She remained a committed and dedicated member of this Church which is now the New Rose of Sharon Elim Baptist Church of Norfolk and enjoyed serving with the Missionary Society ministry until she became ill. Mamie’s community involvements included membership in the Brown Diva’s Birthday Club and the Huntersville Seniors Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands,George Bradberry Stokes, James Foy, and James Walker, and her sister, Bernice Delores Revels. Mamie is survived by two daughters, Hyweda Bernice Tajiddin of Baltimore, MD and Karen El-Amin of Chesapeake; two sons, George Roderick Stokes and Winfred Dean Stokes of Norfolk;
eleven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The body will lie in state at the funeral home Monday from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. The family will greet friends from 4:00 to 6:00PM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at New Rose of Sharon Elim Baptist Church, 3001 Indian River Road, Tuesday, May,14 at 12:00 noon followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia.
