George Columbus Jones, Sr. was born on July 6, 1930 to the late Henry Jones and Maggie Taylor Jones. The youngest of two children, George was raised in the Huntersville section of Norfolk, VA where he attended Norfolk Public Schools.
As an adult, George gave his life to Jesus Christ. George actively served in the United States Air Force. He subsequently worked with the Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation (NORSHIPCO), where he was well-known as “26”. George retired as a supervisor after 33 years of faithful service in 1992.
George married the love of his life, Greta Louise King, on November 2, 1951 and they were blessed with five children: Sandra, George Jr., Kevin, Robin, and Shelia. Together, they raised their children in Norfolk, VA and Portsmouth, VA.
George was a well-known repair man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and he enjoyed traveling to professional football games. George also enjoyed attending football games at Norfolk State University. George loved participating in family gatherings, hosting annual cookouts for family and friends, and going to casinos.
George was predeceased by his parents, Henry Jones and Maggie Taylor Jones, one brother, Henry T. Jones, cousins, Rosa Mae Jones Parker and Emily Parson, and one great-grandson, Dereontay Collins.
George leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 67 years, Greta; five children, Sandra Phillips of Chesapeake, VA, George Jones, Jr. of Chesapeake, VA, Kevin Jones (Della) of Suffolk, VA, Robin Jones of Portsmouth, VA, and Shelia Bell (Lonnell Sr.) of Suffolk, VA; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
