Obituary for Magnolia Mullen (Nesmith)
On April 9th, 1924, Magnolia Nesmith was born to her parents Lottie and Bennie Nesmith! She was raised and educated in Hemmingway (Williamsburg), South Carolina, along with her many siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles! Her early years of working on the family farm was the backbone of her hospitality and kindness!
During her twenties she moved to Norfolk, Virginia and married James Thomas Mullen (deceased). She worked many years as a baker employed by Copperthite Pie Company, Giant Open-Air Market and Farm Fresh! She retired from Farm Fresh after 34 years!
Magnolia resided in Chesapeake, Virginia for over 60 years! She was admired and praised by many for her masterful way around the kitchen! In other words, she could COOK! Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners were a major production at her house! Her love and devotion for her family and friends was expressed repeatedly in her preparation of meals! If something was going on, it was common for her to show up with a pot of something good and a cake or two to add to the table! We didn’t know how she did it, but we were glad she did!
Maggie, as she was referred to by most, further demonstrated her servant’s heart as a faithful member of Full Gospel Church of Deliverance (Former Senior pastor Ernest and Orla Martin) for over 50 years! She served as a member of the choir and senior usher board! In recent years she was honored as one of the oldest members of the church! An honor which she wore proudly!
Besides cooking, some of Maggie’s favorite things were shopping (just try keeping up with her at the mall), plants (her rose bushes), reading the newspaper and talking on the phone for hours at a time to her sweet sisters, family and cherished friends! Most favorite of all, get that pole and head to the pier! Maggie loved fishing and not just catching one or two fish……she caught enough to cook and share! By the looks of her cooler, she thought of everybody while she was at the pier! Spots were her favorite…”they were sweet”, she would say!
God knew! This time last year Maggie and her grandson Timothy Douglas went on a fishing outing! They fished all night long!
Maggie has been a constant icon in the lives of so many! It is beautiful to think of the many things that she has been blessed to witness in her family, her
community and the world. Because she lived through so much, her viewpoint was different! Now she has a heavenly perspective!
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her three sisters Eveary Green, Blossom Drake, Annie Beasley and two brothers Curtis Nesmith and Bennie Nesmith Jr. and one Granddaughter LaQuetta, and one Great Grandson Mike.
Magnolia Mullen, (aka, Maggie, Aunt Nola, Sis. Mullen, Sweet Grandma Maggie) departed this life on October 11th, 2019! She is survived by:
Sister: Tena Stone of Norfolk, Virginia
Children : May Frances Douglas (Rayfield), Diane Stroble, Patricia M. Bunch (James, II) and Alton Mullen (Eva); special son & daughter Keith & Joyce Wilson!
Grandchildren: Andrew, April (Curtis), Phyllis (her favorite)(David), Timothy Lawrence (Debra), Alton Jr., Tiffany and Joshua.
Great Grandchildren: Brandon (Stephanie), Kevin, Mario, Curtena (Steve), Ashley, Joshua, Devin, Ariel, Joyelle, Johnathan, Gabrielle, Chanel, Trenton, Reyna, Pilar, Lawrence Jr., and Lathan.
Great, Great, Grandchildren: Faith, Demitri, Kayla, Averi, Iynah, Alston (aka. Man), Tamia, Brandon Jr.
And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends!
It’s almost one year ago, that Maggie fell ill! The seeds of love and kindness that she had sown for years, reaped a harvest of love, visits, phone calls and prayers from so many! Although our hearts are heavy and it’s hard to believe she is gone we rejoice that we will see her again!!
