Obituary for Atlas Tillar

On Wednesday, January 8, 2020 Mr. Atlas Tillar, affectionally known as Uncle A, departed this life at the age of 91 at home surrounded by his nephews.
Atlas was born on August 26, 1928 in Greenville County, Virginia to the late Ester and Austin Robinson as the eldest of four siblings. He was lovingly raised by his great grand parents John and Molly Tillar until the age of six when he moved to Emporia after the death of his great grandfather to be with his grandparents Lilly and Sydney Porter.

Atlas was educated in the Emporia School System and at an early age began to work on the family farm. As a teenager the family moved to Suffolk, VA and Atlas received an opportunity to work in a Suffolk factory manufacturing window screens. Later, Uncle A worked as an apartment Facility Manager in Petersburg, VA until he retired in 1995. After retirement, Atlas moved to the Tidewater area to be closer to his sister Hattie and for the next 30 years, he lived with this nephew Othneil.

Those around Atlas knew him as a quiet and humble man who had a passion for the outdoors. His passion was evident in his immaculately kept yard and bountiful vegetable garden. In addition to gardening, he liked bicycling, riding his moped, and fishing. He especially loved eating the fish fried with cornbread after it was caught.

Atlas also knew and loved the Lord. He was baptized on December 27th on his sick bed by his nephew Raymond Barnes.

Atlas is preceded in death by this parents, brother Walter Kendall, sisters Eva Norman and Hattie Martin, and nephew Quintin Martin.

He leaves to cherish his memories his uncle Lawyer Porter of New York; six nephews Othneil, Fencel, Dale, and Selwyn Martin, and Rodney (Sandrica) and Kevin (Dawn) Norman; three nieces, Roxanne and Michell Norman and Belinda (Raymond) Barnes and a host of great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.
