October 27, 1952, a baby boy was born to Samuel (decease) and Beulah Basnight . Dexter Irwin Basnight was the 1st born of four children : Polley Hargrove , CSM (Ret) L. Barnard Basnight, and Elsie Basnight. He also had a brother named Michael Wynn. Dexter was bastized early in life (Mt Gilead Baptist Church). During his life in Richmond, Dexter attend 2nd Baptist Church and St Peters Baptist Church in Glen Arden . He joined and sang with the Larry Bland and the Volunteer Choir.

Dex as he was called by his close friends, grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. He graduated from Norview High School. His undergrad studies were from Virginia Commonwealth University and his post grad studies are from Virginia State University. He taught in Henrico and Virginia Beach Public School systems. Dexter worked as a draftsman engineer for VEPCO, then as an Art teacher and later in life he was the proprietor of his own lawn business.
Dex loved life and celebrated every chance/way he could. He had a deep love for art . Not just paintings, but any form of art. He has done art work in wood, medals, just about anything you can name. Christmas gifts were always an original art design. His art was displayed at the “HB”. He began his love of art in elementary school and while he was in the Boys Scouts. Dexter earn his Eagle Badge.
Life for Dex was full of experiences that brought many people to his world. The Redskins were his favorite football team, he was a pro at pool, he loved to bowl. He would always have fun with his best friends, Tim Morton, Michael Rodgers , “J”, Yolanda , and Alice Butts. He bowled in competitions with his cousins, Eric and Mary. Dexter also modeled for Ebony Fashion Fair.
Dexter never married but he had plenty nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews to keep him busy. He felt as the oldest he should do discipline as if he was their parent.
The sunset of his life found him with the person he loved best - his beloved mother, Beulah. Also remembering him affectionately are two sisters, Polley Hargrove (Rev Dr Morris), Elsie Basnight , and one brother CSM(Ret) L. Barnard Basnight, two aunts, one uncle and plenty of cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
