Obituary of Harold Leslie Perkins, Jr.

Harold Leslie Perkins, Jr. was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on July 2, 1942. He was educated in the public schools of Norfolk and was graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1960. He received his undergraduate and professional degrees from Norfolk State University and Howard University School of Law. He was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force. During his early career, he was employed by the Virginia Employment Commission. In later years, in addition to his work as a financial consultant, he taught business law at Hampton University and served in the local public schools as a substitute teacher after his retirement. Throughout his life, he engaged in many religious, civic, and philanthropic endeavors, including outreach ministries, charities, and animal rescue. He was an avid sportsman, a health and fitness afficionado, and an animal lover.
Harold was insightful, knowledgeable, and analytical, and he used his experience and talents to help and inspire others. Indeed, he was a mentor to many. His wit and wisdom, his sense of humor, and his story-telling skills drew people to him, and he left a lasting impression wherever he went. Harold was devoted to his family and friends and was fiercely protective of them.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Dr. Annie S. Perkins, and his loving daughter, Dr. Julie Ann Perkins, and two brothers, Attorney Bruce L. Perkins, Sr. (Wanda) and FBI Supervisory Special Agent (retired) Raymond C. Bloomer, Jr. (Lorraine). Other surviving relatives include Rudolph (Juanita), Elmo (Brenda), and Ralph (Linda) Perkins, his uncles; Beverly P. Williams (the Reverend Michael Williams), his step-sister, Audwin Perkins (Lavanda), his half-brother, and Bertoma DeLoatch, his half-sister.
He also leaves to mourn his memory a host of nephews and nieces: Bruce Perkins, Jr., Brian Perkins, Stephanie Kandel (Lance), Erica Bloomer, Mia Nicole Perkins, Andre Williams, Dedrion Short, Norman Deloatch, Audrey Perkins, and Kimara Perkins, as well as grandnieces Kate and Allison Kandel and Journee Deloatch, and grandnephews Jeremy Kandel, Xavier and Jalen Winstead, and Dedrion Short, Jr.
Harold is also survived by many loving cousins, including Carolyn, Linette, Lisa, Frank Jr., Betty Jean, Marilyn, Alvin, Calvin, Russell Jr., Juanita, Valerie, Rudolph, Jr., Reginald, Lynn, Ronald, Tracey, Barbara Ann, Ruth Jean, Linda, Brenda, Gwendolyn, Aaisha, Jordan, Tasha, Kathy, Geraldine, Steven, Joseph, Reuben, Regina, Rodney, Debbie, Eugene Jr., and Anthony, along with special goddaughters Frances Johnson and Gwendolyn Hughes. A host of other relatives, extended family members, and longtime friends throughout the United States are left to celebrate his life.
Harold was pre-deceased by his grandmothers, Queen Victoria White Daniels and Dora Perkins; his grandfathers, Daniel White and Frank Perkins; his parents and step-parents, Gilda and Raymond Bloomer and Harold and Shirley Perkins; Patricia Perkins, his step-sister; Lula Bloomer Jewell, Helen Pearl Smith, Ruby Godfrey, and Rebecca Perkins, his aunts; Ralph Lamb, and Frank, Russell, Zion, Eugene, Leon, and Charles Perkins, his uncles; and Kimberly Perkins and Diane Perkins, his cousins.
Harold made his peaceful transition to be with the Lord on the evening of May 11, 2020, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, with his wife and his daughter by his side. He had fought the good fight and was ready for his reward in heaven.
