John Arthur Smith on June 30, 2020 at Sentara Leigh Hospital heard Jesus say-“ If you lean on me, I won’t let you fall. John responded-time to go, I got to go now. Jesus allowed all of his troubles to be over as he peacefully entered eternal rest.

John Arthur Smith was born to the late John Edward Smith and Sarah Francis Whitehurst Smith on March 10, 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and his son Thaddeus.
Education and keeping a job was very important to John, as his first job was working at Yoder Dairy. John joined the United States Army at the age of 18. John’s military service led him back to Norfolk, Virginia. He transitioned to working at Vepco currently known as Virginia Natural Gas, and retired after 38 years. Security was next at heart with him, he was employed by Cars Automotive for 24 years, Top Guard Security for 15 years. Norfolk Yacht Country Club. John always kept a job working 2-3 at a time. He was also employed by Virginia State Highway Department for 3 years. Big Pig Supermarket for 3 years. Care Plus Pharmacy for 10 years. Norfolk State University for 2 years. Virginian Pilot for 1 year. Janitorial Service at American Window Cleaner.
Family held a special place in John’s heart. Not only did he devote his life to be the best husband, father, grandfather imaginable.
John leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife Blanche Futrell-Smith, mother-in-law; Erdie Boone, father-in-law; George Boone, Children; John (Janice) Smith, Linda Smith, Christine Arnold, Norbert(Donna) Warren, Augustine Smith, Fur baby; Sassy, one daughter-in-law Darlene Smith. In addition, he is survived by thirteen grandchildren; Ebony Smith, Katina(George) Richardson, Min. Nikita Bright, Mattea(James) McGhee, Aristotle(Joslyn) Arnold, Thaddeus Smith, Clay Smith, Claudine Smith, Sir Norbert Warren, Norshonda Warren, Yolanda(Omar) Clark, Earlene (Twan) Kearney, Nicole Dupleiss, 18 great grandchildren; Two great great-grandchildren; sister; Ethel (Oscar) Mason, five sisters-in-law; Regina (Randolph) Outlaw, Kim Boone (Carl), Joyceteen Boone (Kenny) Tonya Patterson, Angela Boone (Marlow), one special aunt; Rosalee Wilson, He is also survived by a host of other relatives. John touched so many lives, he was loved, and will truly be missed.
