Margaret Mann Burrus departed this life on July 8, 2020, at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. She was born on June 11, 1932, to the late Laura Mann Barrow and the late Monroe O’Neal in Scranton, N.C. Margaret married James Henry Burrus on October 11, 1950. They were married for 67 years until he preceded her in death on August 8, 2018.
A loving and doting mother and grandmother, Margaret is survived by her daughters: Althea (Raymond) Albritton, Sandra Burrus Cooper, and Clementine (Dwight) Brown; nine grandchildren: James Nathan (Jasmine) Sheppard, Andrea Sheppard, Steven (Shaylee) Albritton, Aaron Albritton, Barrington (Arielle) Cooper, Charles (Siera) Cooper, Adam Cooper, Damian Brown, and Korey Ward. There are also nine great-grandchildren: Abrea Sheppard, Kyndal Sheppard, Thomas Sheppard, Jackson Albritton, Reece Albritton, Blake Cooper, Ari Cooper, Cydnee Cooper, and Charlee Cooper. Margaret thoroughly enjoyed spending time with “all her children”. She loved them dearly.
Margaret is also survived by her sister Rosabell Morrison, and brothers Herbert Barrow, Carlton O’Neal, and Calvin O’Neal. She was preceded in death by her little sister Mary Etta Barrow and little brother Joe Lewis Barrow.
Margaret was a stay at home mother for many years until she began working at DePaul Hospital Norfolk in 1965 as a pediatric nurse’s aide. She enjoyed working with children and her many co-worker friends. She retired in 1979.
Margaret always enjoyed embroidering, cooking, spontaneously singing gospel songs around the house, reading her bible, and attending church at the Historical Queen Street Baptist Church until her health began to fail. She cherished her membership which began under the pastorate of Dr. J. Jasper Freeman.
She believed in the goodness of God and his grace; that God held her in His hands. She was tired and needed rest and to be reunited with her heavenly family and James. She will be so greatly missed, but we all were blessed by her long, caring, and loving life. She is at peaceful rest.
