My life began at Community Hospital on Nov. 20, 1946 to the late Mr. Jeff Matthew Wescott Sr. and Octavia Randolph Wescott. We lived in Downtown Norfolk and my brother Leroy Wescott and I attended Henry Clay Elementary. Boy did we have a ton of brotherly fun along with the neighborhood kids.
In 1955 my family moved to the Coronado area of Norfolk on Wolcott Ave., we were known to family and friends as the Wescotts on Wolcott. Upon graduation from Booker T. Washington High School in the Class of ’64, I voluntarily joined the United States Marine Corps. After serving my country in Vietnam for four years, I returned home and attended Norfolk State University. Feeling the call of the water once again, I joined the Merchant Marines before following in my father's footsteps and joining the brotherhood of Longshoreman of I.L.A. Local 1248, where I worked as a checker.
Throughout my life, there were struggles and challenges, but there were a few things that kept me centered and helped me find purpose and joy. I found joy in my family, especially my girls, each of which is so different, yet so me. I found laughter with everyone I met, especially my baby brother and best friend, Roy. I found beauty in nature, watching the water and taking pictures of the mountains. I found peace behind the wheel whether driving in the city, by the beach, or in the mountains, just as long as the music was loud and the wind was whipping.
On Tuesday July 21, 2020, I found a different peace as I walked into the loving light of the Lord. There to greet me with open arms was my mother and father, my brother and best friend Leroy A. Wescott Sr., my nephew Dario Dick, my niece Shenita Wescott, as well as many other family and friends.
I leave to cherish my memory, my wife Ida Wescott; daughters Giovanni Boyer, Domergue Willingham, Nichole Hayes (Justin ), and Dominique Wescott; stepson, Rudy Powell Jr.; sisters, Helen J. Smith, Mildred W. Cooper and Audrey L. Pierce; grandchildren, Camen, Daesia, Jaylen, and Joelle; step-grandchildren, Destiny, Kiona, Autumn, and Rudy; a special niece Chavonda Frazier; in-laws, Vanessa Brown, Shirley Stallings, and Albert Stallings; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
I may have left this mortal world for the world of immortality, but don't cry for me. I lived my life, to the fullest. I loved with all of my heart. I laughed with and smiled with the totality of my spirit. That is what I want you to remember! Until we meet again, Cheers.
