Robert L. Chadwick Sr.
Our Joy—February 27, 1945 His Victory—July 30, 2020
Robert L. Chadwick, Sr. 75, affectionately known as “Chad” passed away peacefully Thursday, July 30, 2020. He was the youngest son of the late Margaret Chadwick. He attended the public Schools of Norfolk, completing his high school education at Booker T. Washington High School and his undergraduate studies at Elizabeth City State University where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.
Chad loved sports. He was a die-hard Redskins fan. Regardless of the stats for the season, he remained loyal to the end. Basketball was his choice of sport to play. His efforts and desire to compete earned him a four (4) year athletic scholarships to Elizabeth City State University in which he played on the 1969 CIAA Championship Team coached by the legendary Robert “Bobby” Vaughan. The team had a 29-4 record for the season. Elizabeth City held a 50th year reunion celebration for the 1969 CIAA Championship team on February 9, 2019.
On April 1, 2003, he retired from Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority after thirty two (32) years in the Department of Housing Management. He received several Class Act awards from the Housing Authority. His main focus was geared toward the residents who lived in the public housing communities in the city of Norfolk. He was well noted for his participation in framing and developing a city community assisted crime program (PACE). After retirement from N.R.H.A. and four years of rest and relaxation he re-entered the work force as a substitute teacher at Indian River High School for two (2) years.
During the years he acquired a deep love for the Fraternal Family of Prince Hall Masons as well as the Order of the Eastern Star. Chad was initiated into the mysteries of Masonry in Eastern Light Lodge #4 in 1983. Chad took great pride in taking on tasks that enhanced his knowledge of the Craft. Ritualistic proficiency was always one of his pet peeves. District Deputy Grand Master Emeritus honors was bestowed upon him in 2013 under the administration of Shelton Riddick as Most Worshipful Grand Master. Chad felt the need to learn and capture the beauty of the Order of the Eastern Star. He joined Adeline Ward Chapter #197 Order of the Eastern Star January 18, 1989. He served as Worthy Patron from 2007 to 2018. He held the position of Grand Worthy Patron for the Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Stars for the Jurisdiction of Virginia - 2014 and 2015.
Chad spent some of his leisure time with the Corner Boys. They would gather occasionally to rehash the “good old days” and events they spent together as young adults. They would laugh and joke for hours just having good old fun.
He was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the Male Usher Board and Men’s Ministry. He was the Past President of the Norfolk Alumni Chapter of Elizabeth City State University and a Charter member of Iota Chapter, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.
Chad is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Vivian, his son, Robert Jr. affectionately known as “Little Chad”, three (3) grandchildren, Morgan, Austin, Justin and a niece Veronica Evans (Robert) and a host of family and many friends.
