Obituary for Doris Gibbs Hicks (Gibbs)

Doris Ophelia Gibbs Hicks, the daughter of the late Zeb, Sr. and Mabel Gibbs, was born in Craven County, North Carolina on December 12, 1937. She went from labor to reward on Sunday, August 2, 2020 peacefully in her home, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She attended public schools in Craven County as well as studied cosmetology. She worked tirelessly as a civil service worker starting on August 3, 1973 at Defense Commissary Agency (DECA), MCAS, Cherry Point, NC and ended her civil career at Norfolk Naval Supply Center, Virginia on September 2, 2005 after 32 years of service.

Mother Doris was born and reared in a Christian home. She joined Bethel Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. She became the organist at Bethel and St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church for over 40 years, until her relocation to Virginia Beach, VA in 1988. Once settled in Virginia, she visited several churches until the Lord guided her to Enoch Baptist Church, where she began her membership on February 11, 2008. She served as an active and faithful member on the Pastor’s Aide, Noon Day Prayer and Senior Ministries to Enoch, until her passing. She was not just a member, but was the spirit who made the pulpit shine every Sunday, especially during Christmas. Mother had a golden smile that attracted numerous people. Mother’s creativity was displayed through jewelry and candle making, knitting, crocheting, sewing, floral arranging and music.

Mother Doris was married to the love of her life, Miles Hicks, Jr. for 32 years, until he departed this life in 1985.
