James Lindsey Penn Sr. entered into eternal rest on Monday, August 3, 2020 at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, NC after a two year battle with cancer.
Born on July 2, 1944, James grew up in Newport News, VA and attended Huntington High School. He worked for the Hampton Roads Shipping Association as a Longshoreman and retired from Local 1248 in 2007. Drag racing was his lifelong passion and on the racetrack was where he gained many special friendships. He was known for his cooking and grilling, good hearted nature, exceptional work ethic, and devotion to his family.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley Wooden and Thelma Fox of Newport News, VA and his eldest son, James Penn Jr. of Hampton, VA.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Terri Haley Penn of Cary, NC, children; Sean Penn, Jamie Penn, Toni Penn and Tiffany Scott of Cary, NC, Christopher Haley and Rian Haley of Chesapeake, VA, and Chanda Penn of Hampton, VA, brothers; Harry Wooden and Daniel Goldstone of Newport News, VA, grandchildren; Jasmine Crouse of Newport News, VA, Christopher Tyson of Suffolk, VA, Aiden Smith and Gabriel Richardson of Chesapeake, VA, great grandchildren; Jahkia and Jahkiya Carroll, Danielle Serrano of Newport News, VA, nephews; Gary Wooden of Norfolk VA, Kerry Wooden of Newport News, VA, Harry Wooden Jr. of Chesapeake, VA, and Shawnie Wooden of Williamsburg, VA, and a host of relatives and friends.
