Gregory LaMont Banks, Sr., surrounded by his family, was called home on September 2, 2020. He was born on March 25th 1948, in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Frank and Connie Banks.

“Greg” as he was affectionally called, was a faithful member of Trinity-Word of Faith Baptist Church. He served as Trustee, Choir Director, Food Pantry Manager, Maintenance Chairperson/Custodian, and anywhere needed.
In 1972, Greg joined the Norfolk Police Department as a Patrolman. He quickly worked his way through the ranks to become a Captain. Greg served in numerous capacities in the Police Department. Prior to his retirement, he was the Commanding Officer of the First Patrol Division, which included 1/3 of the City of Norfolk.

Greg graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1966 and received his Bachelor of Arts in Criminology, Cum Laude, from Saint Leo College in 1997.

He was a member of Tidewater Law Enforcement Officers Association, the Fraternal Order of Police, National Organization of Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) and the Police Association of Virginia. Greg also had musical ties which afforded him a Musical Scholarship to Bethune-Cookman University and was named an honorary member of the Norfolk State University Spartans’ Marching Band.

A family man with strong Christian-values, Gregory was married to Glendolia “Goldie” Banks, for 38 years. He leaves to cherish his memory, two sons Gregory L. Banks, Jr. and Frizzell D. Wiggins, two daughters, Tiffanie Stevenson and Tara Banks. Three brothers, Godfrey Banks, Sr. (Lydia), Gordon Banks, and Gerald Banks. Two sisters, Valerie Gilbert (Harold) and Verlorcia Banks (deceased). Five grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and a host of loving family and friends.
