Wilbert Upshur Sr.

As the sun made its appearance through the clouds early Tuesday morning, our beloved father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend, Wilbert Upshur Sr joined the heavenly host of angels and his savior. Wilbert was born to the late Susie Upshur Grimes and Maxwell Upshur in Norfolk, VA on May 14, 1932. He was educated through the Norfolk Public School system and participated in various community activities. Wilbert was a hard worker and started working at the age of 13 and retired from the Roland Vault Company after 32 years of faithful and dedicated service. Through his tenure he formed many relationships and mentored many of his fellow employees.

Wilbert was married to the love of his life Burnette Upshur for 60 years. He cared for her and loved her even in her passing by visiting her graveside daily with fresh flowers. Wilbert was a father of 7 children, he was predeceased by his son Wilbert Upshur Jr (Deceased), Five daughters Dianne Bates, Della Hall, Sheila Burnette Upshur, Doreen Adair (Kevin), Stephanie Upshur, and Marjorie Lewis. Wilbert was predeceased by his parents Susie Grimes and Maxwell Upshur, his brothers Melvin Epps Sr, Maxwell Upshur Jr and Carlton Upshur and his sisters Maxine Butts, Margaret Scott, and Jean Upshur. Wilbert was a wonderful big brother to his sister Julia Alston and his brother Bernard Upshur. They had a wonderful relationship and shared many memories. He leaves to cherish a host of 37 Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Great -Great Grandchildren, Great-Great-Great Grandchildren. Wilbert was a founding member of “The Corner Boys” and known for his involvement with coaching baseball, sports and taking his wife on vacations.

Wilbert was truly of beacon of light and hope to all who encountered him. He was always present with an encouraging word, advice about cars, wisdom on life and all the statistics about his beloved Washington Redskins. Even in his sickness, Wilbert always had a positive attitude always gave praises to God saying, “Thank you Jesus”. Wilbert was strong in his faith and secure in his hope in Christ. Even in his death Wilbert has inspired many to live life loving family, making memories, and inspiring others.
