Obituary for Earnest Lavante Everette

Earnest Lavante Everette affectionately known as “Earnestine”
and “James Brown” was born on May 28, 1944 to the late
James and Laura Everette and when she passed was raised by
his stepmother Cora Everette. Earnest departed this life on
Wednesday, October 14, 2020.

Earnest was educated in Portsmouth Public Schools and
graduated from I.C. Norcom High School in 1963. He was
an athlete excelling as a football player. He served two years
in the US Army as a sharpshooter and four years reserve.
He then furthered his education by earning a B.S. degree at
Norfolk State University in history on January 27, 1968. He then
obtained his master’s degree at Old Dominion University in
Education and a minor in Spanish on August 21, 1977.

Earnest was married to Iris B. Everette for 51 years and to this
union 2 children were born.

Earnest was employed as a history and geography teacher
in Hampton City schools for over 25 years and retired early
from Phoebus High school. He also coached the high school
chess team. After years of being an educator he made himself
available to his friends and family when they needed him
as either a handyman, tax preparer, mechanic, traveler, or
jokester. Earnest was a husband, father, uncle, son, and friend
who celebrated two birthdays, claimed to speak Spanish and
Vietnamese, loved to play the lottery, walked every day at Mt.
Trashmore, and was a huge Minnesota Vikings football fan.
Earnest loved getaways whether it was a day at the casino or a
week’s trip to Cancun, Mexico with his entire family.

Earnest at an early age joined St. Marks Baptist Church.

Earnest leaves to cherish his memory his wife Iris B. Everette,
his two daughters Kimberly Snow Rodgers (Vincent L.
Rodgers, Sr.) of Suffolk, VA and Keywonna Saschet Everette of
Alexandria, VA, three grandchildren Zinora Ananda Rodgers,
Vincent Lee Rodgers Jr., and Vanté Lee Rodgers, brother
Johnny Morris, sister-in-law Lavern B. Jenkins, and a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Earnest was preceded in death by his
two brothers and one sister James Everette, Jr., Ulysses Morris,
and Elaine Harris.
