Obituary for Katie Butler (Pittman)

On March 28, 2021, Mrs. Katie Pittman Butler, cherished mother and adored
grandmother beyond measure, was granted her angel wings at the blessed age of
98 years old.

Katie was born in Newport News, Virginia, April 19, 1922. At an early age
she and her family moved to Norfolk Virginia, where she was educated in the
Norfolk Public School System and graduated from Booker T. Washington High
School. She was affectionately known by her classmates, friends and family as
“Kate,” “Alberta” and “Berta.” She loved the Lord and was a longtime member of
Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church and was its oldest member as well.

Katie was the daughter of the late Joseph and Minnie Pittman. She was
predeceased by her husband, Robert H. Butler, Sr . and son, Robert H. Butler, Jr.;
Her siblings: Two brothers, Charles and Joseph Pittman; Eight sisters: Virginia
Scales, Alice Corey, Estelle Spruell, Carrie Pittman, Ruth Walker, Josephine
Pittman, Lazzina Wingfield and Leola Simpson.

Katie dedicated much of her time enjoying family-oriented events, monthly
playing Pokeno, taking care of her grandchildren, and cooking. Katie was a
“Master Chef ” before the term was created. There was not a dish she couldn’t
cook. She had signature dishes that people would travel far and near to enjoy.
There was no competition for her Oyster Dressing, Candied Yams, Potato Salad,
Crab Quiche, Fried Oysters, Fried Pork Chops, Baked Chicken, an array of
delicious soups, Salmon Cakes, Collard Greens, Black-eyed Peas, homemade
Cheese Cake, Banana Pudding, Rice Pudding, out of this world Bread Pudding
and the list goes on and on. She enjoyed watching Ice Skating, Ballet and
classical movies. She also enjoyed playing Tennis as a young woman.

She leaves to celebrate her life: a daughter, Vicki Wooding
(Ernest), a son, Larry Butler (Annie), a daughter-in-law, Inga Butler; Eight
grandchildren: Kim Butler Panchana (Angel), Rhoda Butler Moore (Theodore),
Ricky Lee Butler, Veronica Butler, Nikki Armstrong (Clifton), Tyrone Howard
(Tasha),Larry Howard (Yolanda), and Brandon Wilkerson(Tiara); Eighteen
great grand children, Bryan, Kody and Logan Panchana, Lamaar Moore, Antoin,
Tiffiny, Albert and Ingrid Butler, Malik, Clifton Jr, Jalen and Tyrone Armstrong,

Triniti Wilkerson and Xavion McNulty; Six great great grandchildren, Logan

and a host of nieces and nephews.

All of us leave some things behind when we are gone. She did not leave riches,
but what she left is so much greater. Her unconditional love, devotion, gentle
spirit, and her never wavering selflessness will always be with us to treasure.
