Obituary for Johnnie Lee Morris Sr.

Johnnie Lee Morris, 90 died peacefully at home, Virginia Beach VA on June 4, 2021.

Johnnie was born to the late Laura Outlaw and raised by the late Robert and Fannie Morris in Powellsville, NC.

Johnnie attended C.G. White High School in Powellsville, NC and was a faithful member at New Bethel Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA for forty plus years. As a member, he served in many positions: in charge of Ushers Council, Cook in church kitchen for 30 years, Trustee, and Deacon for 20 plus years. Later he became Deacon Emeritus.

Johnnie moved from Portsmouth to Norfolk and married his late wife, Sara Hill Morris in 1969.

Johnnie retired from NADEP Air Station, Norfolk, VA with 40 years of service, he was able to travel for his job in the later years of his employment. He had a hobby of being a Gardener for many years, where he would grow all types of vegetables. Johnnie would share his vegetables with his neighbors and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Hill Morris, and his siblings, Earnest L. Everette, James Everette, Jr. & Ulysses Everette, William Morris, Robert L. Morris, Otis Morris, Daries Morris, Vera Morris, Myrtle Langley, Karenia Hayes, Magertha White, and Jemima McIntrye.

Johnnie leaves to cherish his memory, daughters, Gale M. Bell, Portsmouth, VA and Angela D. Morris of Seneca, SC; sons, Johnnie L. Morris, Jr., Gales Ferry, CT, and Keith Morris, Hartford, CT; sister, Sylvester Perry, Ahoskie, NC, sister-in-law, Alice Moore, Alexandria, VA, a host of nephews, nieces, and his close friends, Lillian Brinkley, Melvin & Leona Collins, and Ralph & Robin Gainey. A special thank you to Johnnie’s Caregivers: Betty Smithwrick, Vedette Spellman, Glennis Tripp and Lisa’s Residential Care for all their help and assistance.
