On Thursday, June 24,2021 our precious family matriarch Rosetta H Oden was welcomed into the arms of the Mighty Jesus. She was born on March 12,1929 to Norman & Catherine Burford Harris in the Lamberts Point section of Norfolk, Va. She attended Norfolk Community Hospital’s Nursing program & graduated from Booker T Washington High School In Norfolk Va where she met the love of her life, James Oden. It was love at first sight & throughout the years they were inseparable. A selfless, generous & loving couple they opened their home to friends & family, often sacrificing their comfort & needs for others.

Mother’s kindness & generosity extended to community service & social activism. She believed that as Christians we are to positively impact the world d around us- not just for ourselves but for our community & the world. As such, she served as the Villa Heights Civic League Secretary in the early 1980’s,petitioning so that the Villa Heights area could be included in the Park Place Conservation Zone so that residents could benefit from housing rehabilitation loans & grants. She passed this task on to her daughter Audrey who successfully presented the issue to Norfolk City Council & it was approved. Her community service/ social activism continued in various capacities. In 2020, at age 91 wheelchair bound, she voted in the presidential election & had her daughter photograph her & share it to encourage others to vote.
Mother Oden’s family & church were her delights. She served as an example of a strong, intelligent, sweet, Godly lady. She encouraged them to treat others as they would like to be treated & trust in the Lord.
She & her husband were founding members of Fellowship COGIC. They believed in supporting the church with their time, gifts & finances & passed this down to their grandson David, great grandson Dyami & many others.
Love the Lord & prove it with your lifestyle.
Mother was the Adult Sunday School Teacher at Fellowship until she was 91 due to the COVID lockdown. She still continued to write & read her beautiful poetry during our weekly Conference call church services to honor God & encourage the Saints, especially Pastor Cook, since he delighted in hearing her read. She even insisted on listening to the Conference call church service while critically ill in the hospital.
