Obituary for Allen Thurman Moore Jr.

Obsequies for Allen T. Moore, Jr.

The lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime
And in departing leave behind footprints
On the sands of time.
HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW

But thanks be unto God, (who) giveth us the
Victory through our Lord, Jesus Christ.
1 CORINTHIANS 15:57

Mere words will never fully convey the depth our love nor the weight of our loss as we invite you to recapture the wonderful memory of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend, Mr. Allen T. Moore, Jr.

Born to Allen Thurman Moore, Sr., and Annie Winborne Moore on September 25, 1956, Allen, Jr., as he was fondly called by his mom and close friends, grew up in the Truxton section of Portsmouth, Virginia, where he attended and graduated from Craddock High School, A very smart young man with a very keen aptitude for mathematics and electronics, Allen successfully completed an apprenticeship program to become a professional, master electrician. He began his employment at Norfolk Naval Shipyard 03 as a High Voltage Electrician, doing maintenance on power distribution systems. Because of his out-going personality and his impeccable skill as an electrician, Allen was promoted several times, receiving pay raises that reflected his continued educational achievement and specialized training in his field, as well as his ability to work harmoniously with others as a team member to achieve important organizational goals and objectives: He was therefore promoted to a Switchboard Operator at NAVFAC MIDLANT, PWD NNSY. Distinguishing himself as highly competent at performing his job, he was again promoted to an Electrical Engineering Technician at NAVFAC MIDLANT, Utilities and Energy Management. During his tenure as a Federal employee, Allen was considered an Essential Employee for Utilities Operation, charged with the awesome task of responding to emergency situations, such as chaotic episodes of destructive weather, disasters, or periods of increased security threat, always on standby for Navy operation and readiness. He diligently worked for over 37 years until his retirement in November of 2020. Easily making friends, Allen was a warm-hearted and out-going young man who made others feel welcome and at home in his presence.

As a young man of 21 years old, Allen accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior, joining the Garden of Prayer Temple, under the leadership the late Bishop L.E. Willis, Sr. While a member there, he caught the eye of a beautiful young lady, Maxine Davis, who later become the love of his life for 43 years, just shy of 44 years this July. Allen quickly blended into the Davis family, developing a very close and loving relationship with Maxine’s mom, the late Mother Melissa Richardson Davis, and her father, the late Deacon Billie Davis, and her siblings as well. A very handsome young man, Allen bore a striking resemblance to Maxine’s father, so much so that he could have easily passed for his son. After marriage, they (The Moores and the Davises) all later joined the Holy Light Church of Deliverance, pastored by Bishop Samuel L. Carruth, where Allen served on the Men’s Usher board and the security team. Because of his faithfulness to the work of the Lord, He was later ordained as Deacon Allen T. Moore, Jr. at the Holy Light Church of Deliverance. After his brother-in-law, Dr. Borbie L. Davis, became the Pastor of the Mount Zion Interdenominational Church, he appointed Allen as a Trustee, a position in which he served faithfully during his tenure. After founding and establishing his own church, the Bibleway Evangelistic Temple Church of God in Christ, Pastor Davis joyfully welcomed members of his own family, who voluntarily decided to help build this branch of God’s kingdom in the earth. Allen enthusiastically and faithfully served as a member of Bibleway until his failing health and his transition to glory.

Without question, Allen T. Moore, Jr. was a great man and a marvelous human being, especially as a family man and a friend to others. He was a loyal husband, lifetime best friend, lover, confidant, and excellent provider to his wife, Mrs. Maxine Davis Moore. His children also knew him as a great daddy, one who loved them unconditionally, provided for them generously and unselfishly. He doted on his grandkids as well, and was a caring brother to his only sibling, Melvin. Allen leaves to cherish his memory, a beautiful and devoted wife, who faithfully served as his sole caretaker during his extended illness, Maxine Davis Moore; three children to carry his legacy: one son, his namesake, Mr.Allen T. Moore, III (Sharonda); two daughters, Candace Melissa Freeman (George) of Chesapeake, Va.; and Shynette Barks of Portsmouth, Va.; one brother, Mr. Melvin Moore of Portsmouth, Va.; nine grandchildren: Isaiah, Allen J., Carlton, Alyssa, Melyssa, Egypt, Cairo, Trayvon, Keith; and one great grandchild, Brooklyn.; one maternal aunt, Mrs. Jean Winborne, and one maternal uncle, Mr. Starky Winborne; and a grand host of cousins, other close relatives, lifetime friends and acquaintances.
