Obituary for Barbara Lois Jones

Barbara Lois Jones, 83 entered into eternal rest May 5, 2022. She attended the public schools of Norfolk, while graduating from Booker T. Washington high school at the age of 16, class of 1955.

She would proceed to earn a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree, respectively from City University of New York. Later, she obtained employment with New York City Board of Education as a dedicated educator. She was referred to as an exemplary and extraordinary model for the profession. She singularly distinguished herself as a reading specialist and specialized in early childhood education. She subsequently retired as an Assistant Principal from PS 45.

She was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., on April 2, 1977 and became an active member of Queens Alumnae Chapter for many years. She served on the Education Teen Lift, and the International
Awareness and Involvement committees.

In 1995, Barbara, along with a group of sorority sisters and friends traveled to ACCRA, Ghana, West Africa. At that time they adopted a school which catered to students with learning disabilities. Due to her efforts in support of this school she was enstooled as “Queen Mother” in 2005.

Barbara returned to her hometown and joined Norfolk Alumnae Chapter of DST Inc. where she remained active until she became ill.

Left to cherish Barbara’s memory include one sister Cheryl Ballance, three brothers, James Jones Jr., Gregory Jones and Gary Jones, one niece Jessica Biagas, four nephews, Kenneth Mclean, Courtney Jones, Kevin Jones and Mylo Jones, two grand nieces and two grand nephews and one cousin Terry McFadden.

The family of Barbara Jones graciously extend our sincere thanks to everyone who extended their kindness and expressions of sympathy during this time of bereavement.
