Vivian Isabella Walker was born in Norfolk, Virginia on June 26, 1929. She was the second eldest of five daughters, Elizabeth, (deceased), Theon (deceased), Joyce (deceased) and Elsie to James and Alice Square. Growing up was difficult for Vivian, due to the death of her mother when she was only eleven years old. She was very blessed because their father, James, was loving and caring.
Her education began at Laura E. Titus Elementary School and after high school, attended Norfolk State College. She had a love for school and graduated high school at 16 years of age, where the language of Latin was her favorite subject.
She later married Altermont Walker, an Army Veteran. They were married for over 40 years, before his passing in 1978. They had five children.
More than anything, Vivian loved serving her community, where she was adored by many for her work. Service was the price she paid for the space that God had given her to occupy. She was a member of Greater Metropolitan and later of Metropolitan AME Zion Churches, where she served in many roles, starting as a child. She served on Usher Board #2, Deaconess, Stewardess, Missionary and Gospel Choir, just to name a few.
In 1953, she joined the Beulah Beauty of the World Temple #4 and held significant positions in the organization. She was Financial Secretary for the State, worked in the office as the Financial Secretary for the Grand. In addition, she was an Honor Guard, and a part of the Nominating Committee. As another service, she joined the Eastern Star in 1968.
Vivian was member of the Norfolk Senior Olympic Bowling League, while there she received many trophies. She loved bowling and her team won several of their tournaments. She retired after thirty years from the Naval Supply Center.
She leaves grieving her children, Akua Bernadette Scott, Alice Patricia Walker, Janet Vivian Walker, Elizabeth Lawrence (David), and Altermont Eugene Walker (Vanessa). Her only living sister Elsie, ten grandchildren, 24 greatgrandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
