Obituary for Jean Evelyn Derricott (Holley)

On Thursday, July 28, 2022, our beloved, Jean Evelyn Holley Derricott entered eternal rest. “Ms. Jean” as she was affectionately known to all, was born in Norfolk, Virginia on May 5, 1941, to the late Jettie Hathaway and James Hathaway. She received her education in Norfolk Public Schools. She met and married Clyde W. Derricott Sr. From this Union, God blessed her with Clyde W. Derricott Jr., J.J. Derricott, and Javonna G. Derricott. Jean, the fifth of five children. Was preceded in death by four siblings, Alphonso (Hamp)Hathaway, Barbara Surratt, Gloria Stewart, and Shirley McInnis.

She served in the United States Coast Guard from July 30, 1974, to July 29, 1977. She attended Virginia Wesleyan University and Graduated from Norfolk State University in 1982. She worked for the United States Government, she taught and tutored Accounting, worked for The City of Norfolk in the Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue, and the Internal Revenue Service as a tax auditor. She was the owner of Derricott’s Tax where she serviced an abundance of clients in all 50 states and abroad.

Jean joined the Queen Street Baptist church at an early age. She was active with various Choirs, The Missionaries, the Helping Hands, the Scholarship Committee, and the Finance Committee until COVID 19.

Ms. Jean as she was affectionately called, had her own straight forward feisty loving way to help each person make a positive change. Whenever she met with you, she would greet you with “Hey Sweetie” and end the conversation with, “O.K. Shugga” while wearing her long jean skirts and white crew socks. She attended Income tax recertification each year to become recertified in tax preparation. She was instrumental in applying the correct tax laws and codes to benefit ALL during tax time. Ms. Derricott was the best!

Jean was very active with the Booker T.Washington High School Alumni class and Choir, The Order of the Eastern Star of Virginia, Queen Esther/New Thomas Wheaton No.2, Hannah Court No.1, Prince Hall LOCOP (Purple House), ILA #37 International Longshoreman Association Ladies Auxiliary, The American Society of Women Accountants, National Society of Accountants, Virginia Society of Tax Accounting Professionals, and The Girls and Guys on the Town travel group.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories: Two son’s Clyde W. Derricott Jr., (Katrina) of Edgewood, Maryland, J.J.
