Obituary for Janie Womack Martin (Womack)

On Saturday, September 17, 2022, our dear mother, Janie W. Martin was called home to eternal rest. Affectionately known as Mrs. Janie, she was born on December 27, 1937 in Danville, Virginia to the late Robert H. Womack and Savannah Cobb Womack.

She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia (1956) and was a well-known Majorette that received numerous school awards.

In 1964, Janie was hired at the United States Post Office and during her 37 years, she rose to the position of Accounts Manager. During her tenure, she took great pride in mentoring her subordinates and peers. A woman of high standards and integrity she empowered and challenged them all to success. All who fell under her tutelage respected her and are saddened by her transition.

Janie’s walk with Christ began at an early age. She was baptized at First Baptist Church of Logan Park, Norfolk, Virginia and actively worshipped with her siblings and children until her death. She was an active and faithful member for over 60 years, serving in a myriad of capacities, to include election to the Trustee ministry in 2002, election to Church Treasurer in 2009, and member of the Budget Committee. In 2018, she was celebrated for her induction in the prestigious Four Score Club, reserved for members age 80 and over. Due to her faithful service, she was recently honored and received “Emeritus” status in July 2022.

Janie’s precious memory will always linger in the heart of her husband of 65 years, Rudolph Martin, Sr.; three children, Michele M. Russell, Kathy Barney (Donald), and Rudolph “Tiger” Martin, Jr. (Renee); seven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; three sisters, Lena Womack, Lucille Bland and Patricia A. Womack, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in death by her sister Betty Wilson and three brothers, Henry Womack, Pete Womack and Don C. Womack.

Janie's hobbies included cooking, reading, spending time with family and most of all bowling. Janie mastered the precision of “STRIKES”. In July 2022, which was the last time she bowled before her illness took over, she walked away with a STRIKE.

Although our hearts ache, we, the family, rejoice in knowing that God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in the time of trouble. Our hope for tomorrow is recorded in Revelations 21:4. She will truly be missed by all that knew and loved her, including her church family.
