Obituary for Ronald Tyrone Barnes

The race is not given to the swift or to the strong, but to the one who endures to the end.
Ecclesiastes 9:11

The Lord called Ronald Tyrone Barnes to his heavenly home on September 13, 2022. He is the son of Catherine Barnes, the late Russell Barnes, Jr. and Fannie C. Barnes. Ronald, affectionately known as “Ookie” was educated in the Norfolk Public School System, and attended Tidewater Builder’s Association Apprentice Program, and became a certified Carpenter.

Following the legacy of his father and grandfather, he became a Longshoreman. He was a member of ILA Local 1970 and held the position of an inspector until his retirement after 26 years of service. Ronald (Ookie) always had a love for sports, especially football. He was a “die hard” Dallas Cowboys fan. He never missed a televised game and considered himself the coach and commentator for the team after each game.

He was very interested in worldwide politics and was an avid CNN viewer. When not watching the news, he loved listening to music…Funk and Reggae was his favorite. He had a passion for art and was a talented artist. Several of his paintings and drawings have been displayed in local businesses.

Ronald’s faith in God was strong. He enjoyed reading and studying the bible. He never failed to share his faith with his family and friends, especially with his children. He loved his family, and his children was his joy…his “babies” as he called them. Ronald was a selfless and compassionate son, father, brother, and friend. He will be missed for his no-nonsense and straightforward personality, his generous spirit to help others, and his style and love of hats.

Memories of Ronald’s life will be cherished by the love of his life, Natalie, his devoted wife; son, Malik, daughter Suga, his mom, Catherine Barnes, stepdaughters, Timerra and Tamanika Pray; special love children Katrina Haynes and Gerald Caldwell, and several grandchildren, His sister, Laura Y. Barnes (Washington, D.C); brothers, Russell Barnes, III (New York, NY), Gregory E. Barnes (LeQuita) and Randy Richardson (Norfolk); aunts, Winifred Woodhouse (Washington, D.C.), Thelma Felton (Portsmouth), Lorraine Joyner (Portsmouth), uncle Harold J. Brown (Evelyn), Norfolk, VA., and a host of cousin, nieces, nephews, and friends, who will be forever grateful for being a part of Ronald’s life.
