Obituary for Gernell Smallwood Harrison (Smallwood)

Gernell Smallwood Harrison, 72, of 238 N Palmyra Dr, Virginia Beach, Virginia went to be with her Lord on September 21, 2022. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland and was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church where she was baptized by Reverend C. E. Griffin.

Her parents, Moses Smallwood Sr., and Mary “Baby Sis” Smallwood; brothers Moses Smallwood Jr., and Milton Smallwood; and grandson Derek Moore predeceased her. She is survived by her son, Terence “Terry” Harrison, daughter-in-law Danielle Moore-Harrison, and Adopted Son Rodney “Sean” Rheubottom and Mr. Terry Bullock; god daughter Lenita Griffin, god son Kermit Diggs, grandchildren, Dylan Moore, and Trey Harrison; great-grandchildren, Isla, Marley, and Devlin Moore; chosen sisters Victoria Robinson, Rosalyn White, Joycelyn Bethea; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

She was educated in the Norfolk Public School System. After receiving her diploma, she worked for many years at General Electric, Quality Control at Mitsubishi Chemical, and as a Personal Care Technician both at Southeastern VA (Virginia) Training Center and in her home. Over the course of her life, Gernell had a host of other employment opportunities where she impacted others and ensured her son continued to be taken care of.

As a member of First Calvary Baptist Church, she took part in many ministries within her church community to include Vacation Bible School, Family Life, Young Adult Choir later named the Gospel Choir, Grace Ensemble, Hospitality Ministry, Women’s Ministry, AR Caesar Sunday School Class, Mary D. Long Missionaries, Kitchen Ministry, Pastor’s Aide Ministry, and Prayer Warriors. Her church appreciated all the work she contributed, and she will truly be missed.
She was also a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church’s Bible Study Fellowship.

Gernell had a genuine love for people coupled with a kind and generous spirit, enjoyed laughter, and took care of anyone who entered her home. Her cooking and baking were enjoyed by family and friends. She was small in stature, but her heart was big. Her servitude of God knew no bounds.

The family of Gernell sincerely appreciates all the sympathy, condolences, and genuine love poured back into the women who consistently poured into others. We know that each of you have loved and honored our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11am on October 6, 2022 at First Calvary Baptist Church 813 Henry Street Norfolk, Va. 23504. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Viewing will be
