OBITUARY
Christine Baker Reid was born on December 15, 1929, in Oak City (Martin County), North Carolina. She was the second child of eleven born to the late Booker T. and Annie Sue Baker.
On January 14, 1948, she married Elijah Dixon and from this union came a daughter, Peggy M. Dixon. She was married to Benjamin B. Reid on May 29, 1959, until his passing on April 3, 1978. She was employed at the Enlisted Mess Club on Norfolk Naval Base for almost 15 years before becoming a Governess for the Smith Family for the next 20 years. In the early 1960s, she joined Saint John’s African Methodist Episcopal Church under the pastorage of the late Reverend Walter L. Hildebrand. While at St. John’s AME Church, she was a member of Female Usher Board #1, the Lay Organization, the Gospel Choir, the Pastor’s Aide Club, and Dorothea Jacobs Fellowship Group. After leaving St. John’s AME Church, she joined New Hope Church of God in Christ under the late Bishop Herman Clark, Sr. At New Hope, Christine was President of the Female Usher Board, a member of the Mass and the Gospel Choir, and the Hospitality Committee. Upon her return to her home church of St. John’s AME Church under the leadership of Reverend John Burton and became a member of the Lay Organization.
Outside of being a devoted wife, mother, grand-mother, sister, auntie, sister-in-law, and Christian, she also enjoyed crocheting, cooking, sewing, and her numerous “fur-babies” (her dogs). Affectionately known as “Nana” to many children growing up, Christine could be found tending to her garden, entertaining guest at the kitchen table while drinking coffee with cubes of cheese in it, or at church worshiping. If she ever saw someone in need, she never hesitated to offer comfort to them in the form of a hot meal, a place to stay, a shoulder to cry on, or prayer. She was also a member of Margaret Francis Chapter #101, Order of the Eastern Star of VA, PHA.
Christine gained her wings on December 24, 2022, after answering the call from her father and Savior, Jesus Christ, to return home. This beautiful angel currently watches over her daughter, Peggy Dixon; two granddaughters Shernette “Nicki” Dixon, and Chrissy Dixon; three brothers Benjamin Baker (Gray), Oak City, NC, Ben Baker, Oak City, NC, and Bishop Columbus Baker (Jacqueline), Columbus, Ohio; and one sister Brenda Johnson (George), Oak City, NC; Godchildren Cynthia Carmen, Joseph Johnson, and Michael Johnson; her extended family Mr. Clell and Carol Smith and the loves of her life, their children Ian and Kendall Smith; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and dear friends. She was predeceased by four brothers and two sister, Clarence Baker, William Baker, Willie Baker, Linwood Earl Baker, Roberta Parker, and Elsie Langston.
