Obituary for Laverne Michelle McClair (Campbell)

Laverne Michelle Campbell McClair was born on May 23,1961, in Charleston (James Island), South Carolina. She was the fifth child of eight children born to the late Josiah Campbell Sr, and Anna Mae Campbell.

On July 16, 1983, she married Kevin McClair Sr., and from this union came a son, Kevin (KayJay) McClair Jr., and a daughter Sierra McClair. She received her education at Fort Johnson High School, along with her Associates Degree in Administration from Key Business College, and Diploma in Medical Billing and Coding from Everest College. She was employed at Charleston Naval Base before she moved to Virginia in 1991. She then worked at Glasser and Glasser in Downtown Norfolk as a secretary. Following these positions, Laverne spent a total of seventeen years working as a contract administrator, with three different companies: two in Chesapeake, VA and Portsmouth, VA; then finishing out this career at Marine Hydraulics International, Inc. (MHI) in Norfolk, VA, all before going out on disability in 2015.

After her work years, she dedicated her time to her family, enjoying watching her children grow into their own, as well as witnessing her grandsons groom into young men. Every Monday and Tuesday night you could always find her at her favorite place, Witchduck Bingo Hall; during the Fall, in the house on Sundays cheering on her beloved Pittsburgh Steelers; and during any holidays and celebrations, playing cards with beloved family and friends. Laverne always had a smile that could light up any room. She was tough and sweet and family meant everything to her. Laverne had so much love, joy, happiness, and faith in her that she always made each day a great day! Even when her sickness began to take a hold on her, she stayed grounded in her faith and continued to enjoy her close family and friends.

Laverne passed away unexpectedly, early morning on January 3, 2023, after answering the call from her Father and Savior Jesus Christ, to return home and be free from pain. This beautiful angel currently watches over her daughter, Sierra McClair and two grandsons, Darius Wilson and Dominic McClair. She leaves behind her husband, Kevin McClair Sr., mother, Anna Mae Campbell, three sisters Joel Wigfall (Issac), Gail Hamilton (Anthony); sisters-in-law, Jeanette Campbell and Donna Campbell; three brothers, Timothy Campbell Sr., Josiah Campbell Jr., (Karen), and Leslie Campbell; nephew Trevor Gaillard, Godmother, Louise Buncum, and a grand extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends. She was predeceased by her son, Kevin McClair Jr.; father, Josiah Campbell Sr; sister Claudia Murray; brother Stanley Campbell; nephew Zo’ante Cuffee; and grandsons Xavier and Elijah.

The family is extremely grateful for all the love and support during this difficult time. Any donations; flowers, food, funds, etc. would gracefully be accepted to the family’s home, Graves Funeral Home, or directly to her daughter Sierra (Cashapp $SierraCM).
