Obituary for Robert Louis Smith

Robert Smith

On Thursday, January 19, 2023, our beloved Family Member, Friend and an Inspiration to us all, Mr. Robert Louis Smith (affectionately known as “Smitty”), peacefully departed this life to be with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Robert Smith, 94, of Chesapeake, VA was born March 4, 1928, in Harlingen, TX. He was the son of the late Lemmie and Maggie (Shuler) Smith. He grew up in Gonzales, TX and attended Edward High School. He later enlisted in The United States Armed Forces in 1946 and soon after married his beloved wife, Margie Ree (Franklin) Smith on September 24, 1952.

Before settling in Chesapeake, VA, he was stationed in places throughout the world; Chinon France, Germany, Guam, California, and other various states. Robert served twenty years in The United States Armed Forces and received several accommodations before retiring in 1966 as Sergeant First Class.

After retiring from the US Armed Forces, Robert worked 20 years as a Receiving Officer and Supervisor at the Naval Supply Center in Norfolk, VA.

Robert was a loyal member of Total Life Church since its inception and served faithfully in various ministries. Just to name a few; Greeters, Seniors’ Delight, Flag Ministry, Building Maintenance Team, Member Care, and other numerous tasks.

He was known for his loving kindness and candy sweets for the children at church. When children saw him, they look directly at his coat pocket for a hand full of treats. Robert was faithful in funding TLC’s Kidz Zone with a small stiffen making sure each child was able to give towards Offerings on Sunday mornings.

He was fan of New York Yankees baseball team and his favorite football team Philadelphia Eagles. You could always count on his wittiness and sense of humor when walking through the church doors, he often says, “Get on in here!” or “Everybody alright?”

He was a devoted husband and family man and loved hunting with his friends. Robert was also a member of The Tidewater Hunting Club. He was known for growing beautiful vegetable gardens from sweet potatoes to snap beans. When Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays were upon us, Robert made sure to purchase fresh greens to give to friends and family.

Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty-eight-years, Margie Ree Smith; his parents Lemmie and Maggie Smith; two sisters: Susie (Smith) Wilson and Rosie (Smith) Woodson and brothers: Charles Smith; Jesse Smith; and Lemmie Smith.

He is survived by two sisters: Addie (Smith) Milton and Lillie (Smith) Wilson and brother Willis Smith (Frances Jo); his dearly loved goddaughter Sharon Cooper-Lewis (Kenneth); and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, church family, and loving friends.

Rest in the peace of God, our dearly beloved Smitty.
