Obituary for Alma Budd Young (Budd)

Alma Budd Young was born June 11, 1923 in Norfolk, Virginia, the first of two daughters born to George and Eunice Russell Budd. She completed her elementary education in the Norfolk Public School System. After high school she worked at the Naval Base Supply Center for about 10 years. Her civil service career which spanned 32 years included working for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Post Office in California and Colorado; returning east to Washington, DC, where she attended business school and federal government sponsored classes which qualified her for a job with the Department of Commerce, lasting into retirement.

The greatest influence on her spiritual life in her younger years was her maternal grandfather, the late William Russell. Through reading scripture, church attendance at St. Marks AME Baptist Church, bible study, listening and observing her grandfather, she grew to love the Lord. Her burning desire was to be used of God in Christian service to others in whatever capacity God saw fit. In 1964, through a series of bible studies, she was convicted by the Holy Spirit to be baptized into the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) faith under the pastoral leadership of Paul Cantrell at the First SDA Church, Washington, DC. The year 1973 was a loving and memorable year for Alma – she married the love of her life, Walter G. Young – this union lasted 26 wonderful years until his demise in 1999.

After retiring, she moved back to Norfolk, Virginia around 1982 and transferred her membership to the Norfolk SDA Church (Kempsville Road) where she remained for 14 years before transferring her membership to Campostella Heights. She served in numerous positions – greeter, server, Sabbath School Chorister, Chancel and Sanctuary choir member, soloist, deaconess and visitation group member for nursing home visits on the 2nd and 4th Sabbaths.

Alma loved the Lord, her church family and being of service to others as Christ served mankind on earth – she saw this as her Christian mission on earth – to serve and be of service, to help others whenever and wherever, telling them and showing them the love of Jesus because some didn’t know Him. Her generous spirit, her smiling face, her giggling laughter, and her 2 ½ inch heels will be remembered fondly.

Alma leaves to cherish her memory the following related families – Budds, Cherrys, Delaneys, Ellisons, Harps, Lees, McDowells, McGills, Rivers, Russells, Trapps, Websters, Youngs and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews; running buddies, Alescia Fladger and Mary Taylor; her croonies, Rufus Hill and Marcus McGee; best friend of over 50 years, Barbara Clarke, and her beloved church family.
