Obituary for Dorothy Miller Butler (Lipscomb)

Dorothy M. Butler passed on Thursday, February 22, 2024. Dorothy affectionately known to many as “Dot” was born on June 21, 1925, in Purley, N.C. to the late Plum Lipscomb and Lena Lipscomb.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Chief James Butler, three brothers, James Lipscomb, Estee Lipscomb, Kemp Lipscomb; and three sisters, Camilla Dudley, Virginia Watkins and Ossie Powell.
Dorothy lived in Danville, Virginia for many years. After the death of her husband, SC2 George P. Miller, she relocated to Norfolk, Virginia with her family. She began her career as a civil service employee with the United States Federal Government. She retired after several years of exemplary service. In retirement, Dorothy volunteered at the Information Desk and administrative office for Norfolk Community Hospital for many years.
Most importantly, Dorothy loved her God and church. She became the Mother of the church at New Rose of Sharon Elim Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Virginia. Mother Butler was the first church mother in the City of Chesapeake to be a part of two churches coming together. She played a major role in this merger. She was an active member and was faithful! She attended church service regularly, even when she felt poorly.
Mother Dorothy Butler earned her crown and is now in the bosom of Jesus. She will continue to live in the hearts of those who cherish her memory, including four sons, Marty Miller (Liz) of Norfolk, Larry Miller (Meta) of Chesapeake, George Miller, Jr. (Deborah) of North Carolina and Donald Miller (Paulette) of Norfolk; and a daughter, Janice Miller Jones (Robert) of Virginia Beach; five grandsons, Calvin Chris Fields, Marlon Fields, Marty Eric Miller, Marcus Miller and Michael Miller (Predeceased); four granddaughters, Marnie Miller, Marteesha Miller, Melenie Miller and Tarishma Bruster; four Sisters in Law, one Brother in Law, a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. In addition, several special friends including Mrs. Gwendolyn Woods, Mrs. Patricia Darden, Mrs. Juanita Sanderlin, Mrs. Delores Birke, and Mrs. Lorraine Bryant.
