We celebrate the life and legacy of Clyde Whitfield Copeland, Sr. of Chesapeake, Virginia, who peacefully entered eternal rest on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the age of 97.

Born on January 25, 1929, in Norfolk, Virginia, Clyde was one of six children born to Walter Copeland, Sr., and Pearl Boone Copeland. Raised in Norfolk's Lambert's Point community, he attended Norfolk Public Schools and developed the values of faith, hard work, and perseverance that guided him throughout his life. He attended First Baptist Church Lambert's Point and remained a faithful supporter of his church throughout his life.

Affectionately known as "Cope," "Mr. C.," "Cap," and "Granddaddy," Clyde was a man of independence, strength, and unmistakable character. He believed in living life on his own terms and was never afraid to speak his mind. Those who knew him best will remember his gift of gab. He loved to talk, tell stories, share wisdom, and engage anyone willing to listen.

Inspired by his father's seafaring career, Clyde answered the call of the water at an early age. He spent a number of years as an Able-Bodied Seaman with the Merchant Marine, traveling extensively throughout the United States and abroad. His journeys took him to ports and countries around the world, exposing him to diverse cultures and experiences. He later worked as a longshoreman before retiring due to disability.

Clyde had a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, style, and self-expression. He had a penchant for boats, fine clothing, jewelry, and furs. He often designed and customized unique pieces, taking pride in creating things with his own hands. A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Clyde enjoyed gardening, fishing, and spending time near the water. He was also an avid bowler who remained active in the sport well into his nineties, forming lasting friendships throughout the bowling community. Committed to his health and independence, Clyde embraced fitness as a way of life and took pride in maintaining his strength and vitality well into his nineties.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Copeland, Sr. and Pearl Boone Copeland; his brothers, Walter Copeland, Jr. and Charles L. Copeland; and his sisters, Eunice Wilhemena Hall and Jenice Copeland. Clyde is survived by his sister, Roslyn C. Watson; his children, Darceline Copeland Harris (Larry), Toni B. Jones, Clyde W. Copeland, Jr., Anita L. Seymore, and Ramona Bailey-Ford (Al). He was a proud grandfather to La-El Herbert (Brandan), Jordan Herbert, Nicolas A. Herbert, Bailey K. Jones, Carl Jeffers, Samone D. Bailey, James Chavis III, and Randee Grannum. He also leaves behind many cherished great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to the many healthcare professionals and caregivers who provided compassionate care and kindness throughout his later years.
