Hassie S Hughes (Simmons) Obituary
Hassie Lee Simmons Hughes, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, homemaker, and faithful servant of God, peacefully departed this life on September 3, 2026, at the age of 93.
Hassie was born on February 12, 1933, in Allentown, Georgia, to the late Eugene and Rosie Lee Simmons. As the oldest of seven siblings, she learned early the importance of family, responsibility, and caring for others. She was a high school graduate of Danville High School. She grew into a devoted wife and homemaker who dedicated her life to caring for and nurturing her family.
In 1954, Hassie married the love of her life, Walker Lee Hughes. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised four daughters: Pat, Joyce, Gail, and Sandy. Hassie was the heart of her family—loving, giving, strong, and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Hassie loved her home and neighborhood, where she lived for more than 60 years. She took great pride in caring for her home and was an avid gardener. Her love of gardening brought beauty and joy to her surroundings, and she enjoyed nurturing her flowers and plants throughout the seasons.
Hassie was also a talented seamstress who loved sewing. When her daughters were children, she lovingly made much of their clothing herself, including their coats. Sewing was one of the many ways she expressed her creativity and love for her family.
She was an ultimate cook and baker, especially known for her pound cake. Many cherished memories were made around her kitchen and table, where food was prepared with love and shared generously. Her home was a place of warmth, comfort, laughter, and love.
Hassie also enjoyed bowling and participated in a seniors league for many years. She treasured the fellowship, friendly competition, and time spent with her fellow bowlers.
Hassie’s faith in God was at the center of her life. She was a devoted member of Union United Church of Christ, where she worshiped and served faithfully for more than 55 years. She was a faithful member of Usher Board #2, served as the church treasurer for many years, and participated on numerous other committees and boards. Her love for God and her church family was evident throughout her many years of faithful service.
During the last year of her life, Hassie was lovingly cared for by Tina Peek. Tina’s compassion, dedication, patience, and kindness brought comfort and support to Hassie and her family. The family is deeply grateful for the loving care Tina provided and for the special bond they shared.
Hassie was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Rosie Lee Simmons; her brothers, J.T. and Willie Simmons; and her beloved daughter, Gail Hughes Lamondue.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory her devoted husband of 72 years, Walker Lee Hughes; her daughters, Pat Hughes Brown (Mike), Joyce Hughes Smith, and Sandra Tee Hughes Rice (Timothy Sr.); seven grandchildren, Mikita, Gerell, Jason, Marketta (Seth Sr.) Timothy Jr., Marcella, and Joie; and seven great-grandchildren - (James/Malachi/Nehemiah/Jayla/Seth/Neriah & Genesis).
She is also survived by her brothers, L.C. Simmons (Barbara) Lithonia GA and David Simmons Macon GA; her sisters, Betty Hughes (Oscar) Jeffersonville GA and Virginia Burnett of Macon GA, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, neighbors, and dear friends.
Hassie loved God, her husband, her children, her grandchildren/great-grandchildren, her extended family, her friends, and her neighbors. She had a generous spirit and a heart that made room for everyone. Her kindness, wisdom, faith, laughter, cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, bowling, and unconditional love will remain treasured memories for all who were blessed to know her.
Though her earthly journey has ended, the love she gave and the lives she touched will continue through the generations.
