Jose Hernandez Belardo Jr. Obituary

Jose Hernandez Belardo, Jr., affectionately known as “Joey” and “Papa,” was born on May 30, 1938, in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Jose H. Belardo, Sr. and Charlotte E. Belardo. He entered eternal rest on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. Jose was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and loyal friend who touched the lives of many.

Jose attended school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1957. He furthered his education at Norfolk State University, where he laid the foundation for a successful career. In 1965, Jose married the love of his life, Annie Hawks Belardo, and began a fulfilling career in retail management at Rices Nachmans Department Store. His leadership skills flourished as he managed locations in downtown Norfolk, Wards Corner, Janaf, Princess Anne Plaza, and Tower Mall in Portsmouth. Jose later continued his passion for retail at S& K Famous Brands in 1990 and Philip Michael Fashion for Men in 2009, where he was known for his impeccable taste and style-he never met a suit he did not like!

A lifelong devoted Catholic, Jose was an active member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, serving as an usher and participating in the Bereavement Ministry. His dedication to family was evident when he took on the role of caregiver for his beloved wife, Annie.

Jose cherished moments spent with family, often spoiling his grandchildren, and sharing his love for old westerns and Doo Wop music. The expression, “He never met a stranger” perfectly describes him, as his warm demeanor made everyone feel like a friend.

Jose was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Belardo Sr. and Charlotte Belardo, wife, Annie H. Belardo, son, Jose H. Belardo III (Elaine), grandson, Darren M. Belardo, and sisters, Barbara B. Pretlow and Isadora L. Reid.

His siblings include : Joan Parson of Chesapeake, VA, Gloria Neal (Andrew) of Chesapeake , VA, and Rosetta Beslow of East Point, GA, and a devoted brother and best friend, Douglas Tyler of Norfolk, VA. He also leaves behind a legacy of love through his remaining grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family and dear friends who will miss his warm smile and generous spirit.
